Is there a penguin on your desk? Should there be on mine?
Having spent most of my professional life in the IT industry (working as a till-tart the rest) I have been unfortunately sheltered from Linux based systems outside of the server space. As anyone who’s been to the site recently will know, I have had falling’s out with my peers over their choice of systems but how much worse could it e if I intended to jump ship entirely on the desktop?
As a server system the linux based boxes we have perform admirably, with constant patching and good security tied into our Active Directory there is very little for me to gripe about. I have had to learn a different skill set to be able to properly look after them, but that is to be expected - even if you keep to one supplier you’re going to have to relearn at some point (NT4 -> 2000 anyone?).
My question though, is how good is Linux for the desktop? How easy is it to tie into the AD security structure we have in place in my organisation, and is it worth me the time and training (budget) to learn a certain distibution? Basically, without stepping too much into fanboy territory, IS linux ready to take on big Microsoft business?
